The Cell Block, the Empowerment of Cytology in Precision Medicine

Melissa L. Randolph, BS, SCT(ASCP)
Technical Coordinator, Cytopathology

This Cyto-econference will provide the participants with tools to help assess adequacy of the cell block during the procurement phase. I will discuss how different types of fixation contribute to the ability of the specimen to coagulate or solubilize during centrifugation.  I will emphasize the importance of developing both a consistent process for creating a cell block, as well as taking the time to educate histology colleagues of pre-analytic issues that are directly proportional to the success of the preparation.  Finally, I can speak, post-analytically to additional techniques that can be incorporatated in the lab using both alcohol fixed and air dried smears to salvage ancillary testing despite cell block failure.

Target Audience

This educational activity is designed for pathologists, cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, students and other members of the cytopathology community.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the steps directly contributing to a sufficiently cellular block specimen.
  • Discuss the types and the method of education for preparatory staff  in the pre-analytic phase of the preparations.
  • Recognize alternatives to cell blocks in the event of failures.
  • Discuss the requirements of cell block cellularity to account for increasing pressure for multiple genomic testing modalities.

Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

American Board of Pathology Maintenance of Certification (MOC)
This product can help fulfill the CME requirements and Self-Assessment Modules (SAMs) mandated by the American Board of Pathology Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process.  Earn up to 2.0 SAM Credit Hours.

Continuing Medical Laboratory Education (CMLE)
The ASC designates this activity for a maximum of 2.0 Continuing Medical Laboratory Education (CMLE) credit hours for non-physicians.  The CMLE credit hours meet the continuing education requirements for the ASCP Board of Registry Certification Maintenance Program. Participants should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Cytotechnologists with Licenses in Florida and California
This program is approved for 2 continuing education credits in the State of Florida and 1 in the State of California. The credit on each link is good for three years from the live presentation date.
