Cervical Malignancies and Potential Pap Pitfalls

Due to successful cervical screening programs, malignant Pap tests are decreasing in number in most laboratories. This leads to fewer opportunities for cytotechnologists and cytopathologists to view cervical malignancies on Pap tests and develop familiarity with cytomorphologic features of malignancy. As the recommended interval between Pap tests increases, prompt recognition of these features will become even more essential in providing quality patient care. This webinar reviews our experience with numerous Paps from confirmed cervical malignancies (squamous and glandular) with pertinent clinical, HPV, and histopathologic data. Key tips and challenging cases will also be discussed.

Target Audience

This educational activity is designed for pathologists, cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, students and other members of the cytopathology community.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop expertise in the cytologic diagnosis of invasive cervical carcinomas by viewing Pap tests from women with cervical cancer
  • Discuss cytomorphologic characteristics and potential pitfalls related to malignant Pap tests
  • Review the current Bethesda guidelines for cervical malignancies on Pap tests
