This case-based didactic session presents a spectrum of pulmonary/mediastinal specimens with diagnoses ranging from inflammatory/granulomatous etiology, cytologic atypia secondary to reactive processes and non-neoplastic entities which could mimic malignancy. The cytomorphologic features and available cell block from each case will be discussed. The participants will have the opportunity to choose their favored interpretation through the polling system.

Target Audience

This educational activity is designed for pathologists, cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, students and other members of the cytopathology community.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the cytologic features of benign/reactive entities that could potentially mimic malignancy
  • List the differential diagnosis for each discussed benign/reactive entity
  • Understand the importance of incorporating the patients' clinical history/imaging and usefulness of ancillary studies in arriving at the correct diagnosis.
