The World Health Organization (WHO) with expert contributors from around the world, have presented an international approach to standardized reporting of pancreaticobiliary cytopathology. It revises the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology (PSC) system for Reporting Pancreaticobiliary Cytology published in 2015 and replaces the six-tiered system with a seven-tiered system. Each of the individual reporting tiers has been elaborated in detail. The WHO system advocates for a close correlation with imaging and encourages incorporation of ancillary testing into the final diagnosis, such as biochemical and molecular testing. This overview will be a helpful update for reporting the current practice of reporting pancreaticobiliary cytopathology

This educational activity is designed for pathologists, cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, students and other members of the cytopathology community.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand and incorporate the seven-tiered WHO system for reporting pancreaticobiliary cytopathology in their practice
  • Compare the recently introduced WHO system with the previously utilized PSC system for reporting pancreaticobiliary cytopathology
  • Review the cytomorphologic features of a broad array of pancreaticobiliary lesions, neoplasms and malignancies
