Role of Fine Needle Aspiration in the Diagnosis of Hematopoietic Lesions

Scott Ely, MD
Associate Professor of Pathology
New York Hospital-Weill Cornell Medical College

Lymphoma is commonly encountered in fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. The diagnosis and sub-classification of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, particularly, low-grade lymphomas, can be extremely difficult in cytology.  The main reasons being morphological overlap between the various types of low-grade lymphomas, difficulty of distinguishing these lymphomas from benign lymphoid process and inappropriate triage of FNA sample.  The strength of this interactive conference is its combination of a cytopathologist and hematopathologist, both experts in their field, to discuss their approach to- and address the challenges of diagnosing lymphoma.   Current lymphoma classification, reporting terminology and pertinent treatment will be also be addressed. Participants attending this session will walk away knowing precisely how do diagnose and sign out the various types of lymphomas.

Target Audience

This educational activity is designed for pathologists, cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, students and other members of the cytopathology community.

Learning Objectives

1.  Understand the cytological approach to work-up of hematopoietic lesions

2.  Recognize cytological features of various types of hematopoietic lesions

3.  Understand technical aspects of ancillary tests
